What is Inline Hockey?

Inline hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Players of all ability levels, children and adults of both sexes, are drawn to the game because it’s fast, it’s competitive and above all, it’s fun.

Skating, passing, shooting and puck control are some of the key skills developed by the players and because it is a non-body checking game, both players and parents enjoy the game in an environment, which promotes safety, sportsmanship and respect.

The game of inline hockey is played with four skaters on the floor and one goaltender in your net. You can have a maximum number of players of fourteen skaters and two goaltenders on you team list or roster. Inline hockey is played with a puck, and the game is played on a concrete, wood or tiled surface called a rink. The rink is surrounded by a barrier called the boards. The game is played for 2 x 20 halves or 4 x 10 minute periods.

The object of the game is to score more goals than your opponent. When a player shoots the puck into the net by having the puck entirely cross the goal line that team has now scored a goal.

        Where it Began in Australia:

In-line Hockey started in 1990 in a car park on Chapel street and since then, Australia has had the bug for in-line hockey. Often referred to as Ice Hockey’s little brother, but In-line hockey is quite different than Ice. The main difference between the two codes is that inline hockey is non contact, which means there is no boarding or body checks. This makes the sport one of the fastest sports in the world and the injury factor is very low, in fact, one of the sports with the lowest reported injuries.

At Roller City Bayswater we are proud to have two In-line hockey clubs which play in two different associations. Bayswater Lions are in Roller Sport Australia (RSA) and the Ballistyx Bulldogs are in the Australian In-line Hockey Association (Ailha). Also we are proud to have one of the biggest beginner Home leagues in Australia, which has produced some of the best young players in the country. Please refer to our home league link.
